New government plan for school WiFi leaves everyone unhappy

14 Jul

The FCC is ready to start doling out up to $2 billion dollars in grants to American schools to pay for WiFi networks, but it doesn’t seem that anyone — especially the schools — are happy about it. The new rules under the aging E-Rate program, which…

Clean energy the focus of Apple’s environmental report

14 Jul

Apple has just released its environmental report for 2013 where the company is highlighting its clean energy use at its offices, stores, and employee initiatives. The report makes note of Apple’s use of renewable energy, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and reduction of carbon footprint.

Apple says:

  • That though it consumed 44 percent more energy between 2011 and 2013, it was able to reduce its carbon footprint by 31 percent for the same period
  • 145 U.S. and all of Australia retail stores are powered by renewable energy.
  • All data centers are powered with 100 percent renewable energy, making it reach a 94 percent renewable usage across its campuses and data centers
  • Commute alternative programs for employees reduced emissions by the equivalent of taking 15,000 vehicles off the roads.

Apple is also making environmental strides in its products by eliminating the use of PVC in cables in China and the launch of the Mac Pro uses 74 percent less metals than the prior design.

The company has been making a big push towards increased environmental responsibility this year.

“At Apple, we believe innovation is about making things better,” Apple VP of Environmental Initiatives Lisa Jackson said in her report. “This simple idea drives us to take action in the face of the very real problem of climate change. We feel the responsibility to consider everything we do in order to reduce our impact on the environment.”

To continue its environmental journey into 2014, Apple will be looking forward to addressing its carbon footprint with its manufacturing partners. It will also be building its new headquarters, which it says “will be a model of energy efficiency and green building design.”

How would you change the Lumia 720?

14 Jul

Just like the Star Trek movies, we’ve mostly preferred the even-numbered ranges of Nokia Lumia handsets to the odds. We heaped praise on the 620, for example, with equal vitriol being poured onto the 520 that nestled beneath it. The Lumia 720…

FCC filing for Apple’s iBeacon hardware spotted in the wild

13 Jul

We’ve covered some pretty cool uses of the iBeacon technology from Apple, but the product itself is still not available for the general public. Now, a new filing has spotted for an iBeacon device through FCC, attached to the product numbe A1573. According to the filing (and the included imagery), this iBeacon measures 5.46-inches in diameter and is powered via USB connection.

The device was tested on behalf of Apple by China’s Audi Technology, noting the 2.4GHz frequency for compatibility with Bluetooth of today. This iBeacon will enable purchasers to utilize Bluetooth 4.0 and wireless connectivity to offer location-based content to compatible hardware, including the iPhone and iPad, as we’e already witnessed with solutions covered already.

Apple’s iBeacon is a cool concept that has already been shown to work in not only Apple’s own retail stores, but partnered companies too. While the device is passing through FCC, it’s still not known when Apple will launch it, if at all. We could also be looking at HomeKit integration, but we’ll have to see.
